Japan's ministry of fisheries wondered where sea turtles go when they migrate, so they hung tracking radios on 100 members of the threatened species and tuned in by satellite.
Japan is the largest breeding ground for sea turtles in the Northern Hemisphere. About 6,000 lay their eggs along Japanese seashores each year.
The transmitters, weighing only 250 grams each, were attached during the breeding season in Spring 1993 to be observed for five years.
